According to the film, it is customary for the people in one clan of a village to live on one side of the river and for those in another clan to reside on the other side. This is because they come from different tribes and worship different gods. Tayang, of course, belongs to a particular family and lives on one bank while Haposan belongs to another and resides on the other side. They meet by chance at an annual underwater festival which only takes place once every 10 years. Tayang is a young man who has spent most of his life on the other side of the river. Haposan is the daughter of Tayang's uncle who lives on this side of the river. They meet because Tayang has come over to go to the festival but loses his way. Haposan saves him and after that they end up spending more time together because they are both looking for their sister (Kumari) who had gone missing 10 years ago during an annual underwater festival. The combination of these two characters creates a peculiar situation which lends itself to drama, comedy and romance. In the process, Tayang and Haposan fall in love. However, things become complicated as it is discovered that the sister they have been looking for was betrothed to a young man from a neighboring village. The other family, which was against this engagement, kidnaps Kumari and marries her to their own son. The boy's name is Jitra. The other family has a daughter named Phorn who is in love with Jitra but cannot marry him because Kumari has been promised to Jitra's older brother (Jak) whom she does not like at all. She tries to change the marriage to a "love match" between Kumari and Jitra but the other family is not interested. She then tries to kill off Jitra but he manages to survive and eventually runs away from home. He gets help from Tayang and leaves his village with him. They then start their life together as husband and wife. However, Phorn follows them and enlists Tayang's help in tracking down Jitra so that her marriage to him can be finalized. The Film stars Chalapati Rao, Sukumari Prakash, Prabhu, Shivaji Ganesan, Savitri , Sivaji Ganesan, Padmini Sopanakumar etc. The film also stars Kamala , Ranjini, Vyjayanthimala, Vyjayanti , Jayamina, Bharathi, Madhavi and Lena.
